| Relay for Life |
[Apr. 23rd, 2007|01:51 pm] |
Some of my friends at school have gotten together the past several years to form a team for the Relay for Life event here in New Braunfels. Last year they all talked about what a great time they'd had, so I decided to try it this year. For those of you who don't know, RLF is an event taking place next weekend in which teams of eight to fifteen people sign up to help raise money for cancer research. Each person is asked to try to get donations of at least $100 for the event. The relay goes on all night, from 7 PM to 7 AM, and there must be a representative of the team walking or running on the track at all times.
The American Cancer Society sponsors this event. For more information or to donate, visit my page on the RLF site. It's a one shot donation (not one of those pledge-per-lap setups) and anything you can do would help. Thanks!

| Yay for summer!! |
[Jun. 20th, 2006|05:26 pm] |
By the way, did I mention that we're going to San Francisco this weekend? Which just happens to be Pride weekend? Oh, yeah. We've got floor space (well, I guess couch space) there, and we've really wanted to go for a while. Plus, it's summer, and we wanted to travel. So we're going!! WOOOOO HOOOOOO In other news, another interesting book related Web site http://www.bookcrossing.com is a really cool and interesting idea. I haven't really had a chance to look through it all yet, but I think I'm gonna like it. Go look. |

| Paper Back Swap |
[Jun. 15th, 2006|07:54 am] |
A while back, my mom told me about a Web site that she thought I ought to go visit. Well, it always takes me some time to follow my mom's advice, but I finally went. Yeah, it actually is pretty cool. Go to http://www.paperbackswap.com Have you heard of it? No, well, it's a community of people who have paperback books to get rid of and want other paperback books to come to them. That simple. You register (give referral credit to UTEeyore79 at yahoo dot com, of course) and then list at least nine paperbacks that are in good condition that you want to get rid of. You get three "credits" just for that. Then, when somebody anywhere wants a book you listed, they let you know, you print out the pre-addressed wrapper, pay $1.59 media mail postage, and send it out. You then get another credit for whatever book you want from anybody's list. When you send, you pay the postage, but when you receive you don't, so it evens out.
Seems pretty useful, as I know I have a lot of books that I've read and won't read again. Plus, it's that community/recycling/helping out thing I kinda like.
Try it. |

| Oh, by the way... |

I hate driving around what should be beautiful landscapes and seeing trash blowing in every nook and cranny. What makes up a lot of that trash? Pesky plastic shopping bags. Ubiquitous, unnecessary, resource-using plastic bags. HEB, Wal-Mart, convenience stores, they're everywhere! Buy one item and you get a bag without question. Buy many items and get one hundred plastic bags, each with two or three items. Other countries have had success imposing a plastic bag tax, whereby any person needing a plastic bag to carry his purchases must pay a fee for it, but I don't see that happening around here anytime soon. Enter ReusableBags.com! Check out the site. I bought this set because I liked the colors. I find they stretch more than you'd think, and with five bags packed into that little hemp carry sack, you can get a whole shopping trip in there! I just keep the set in my car and take them in when I go to any store. Plus, I love the looks on the faces of the store cashiers in New Braunfels when I say, "Wait, I brought my own bags!" They seriously look like they think I'm joking! It feels great to be rid of all that "excess baggage" (mwahahahahaha)
Another note: It's not big, but if you shop at Whole Foods and bring your own bags, they give you a 5 cent discount for each bag. I love that place! |

| Travel to Europe |
[May. 22nd, 2006|06:54 pm] |

The woman and I are attempting to plan our Whirlwind European Vacation for this summer! We've decided that since we may not actually get to travel to Europe more than once, we want to do more than just Spain. We want it all. Now we have to decide how to get it, and how much of "all" is plausible. So those of you who've been, or those of you who've planned to go and have suggestions, let us know. So far on our "must go" list we only have Ireland from me and Spain from her. We don't really care where we fly into and out of, as long as it's pretty cheap. Carly, as our most recent traveler, do you have any suggestions? |

| Random Thought... |
[Jul. 13th, 2005|09:52 am] |
Thinking about things last night while not sleeping. This crossed my mind and I wanted to remember it: "Crying is like masturbation. If someone tells you they never do it, s/he is lying." Carry on with your day. |

| Flipside: Coming Soon |
[May. 29th, 2005|12:57 pm] |

| | I already told you | ] | I need to post about Flipside, but I'm going to have to write it in a paper journal first. The computer is in the middle of the room with the two chain smokers and the TV blaring the hunting and fishing channel 24-7. This is not the ideal environment to ruminate on such a spiritual experience. This is just to remind me to post, I suppose. |

| Yet another reason I adore NPR |
[Mar. 18th, 2004|10:12 am] |
| [ | mood |
| | grateful | ] | This morning on my way to work I heard a story about a music festival that aims to bring together people of many disparate religions in a dialogue through sacred music. I thought this was a great idea, especially in times like these. Then, I heard the music. It was, to borrow a phrase from dear Safetygoth, soul-tearingly beautiful. Hearing this music, I began to see just how these melodies could help to unite people of such diverse backgrounds. Then, the best news of all, this show, which originated in Fes, Morocco, is touring the US. It is only coming to 18 cities, and Austin is blessed enough to be one. I'm not sure that The Girl will want to go with me, but I'm hoping some others will be interested. For info, first read the story at http://www.npr.org/features/feature.php?wfId=1770749 and listen to some of the music. Then, visit the festival's website at http://www.spiritoffes.com/. Let me know if you want to go with me.
PS: After that, you may want to listen to another NPR story with amazingly beautiful, spiritual, uplifiting music. http://www.npr.org/features/feature.php?wfId=1689395 They don't have separate audio clips of their songs, but yoiu can listen to the show and pretty early on they start singing. This show was on in the afternoon when I got off work one day. I got into my truck and was immediately greeted by these haunting, ethereal voices. Wow.
*EDIT* It looks like the tickets are $20, 30, and 40. I'm still looking for info on student prices. |
